An autumn holiday in Cornwall is a lovely chance to explore the art inspired by its coast and communities. If you are staying in Hayle or St Ives Bay, put Penzance and Newlyn on your itinerary this week for a mix of exhibitions and hands-on creativity.
At Penlee House Gallery & Museum, The Art of the Newlyn School: Paintings from The Bowerman Collection runs until 9 January 2027. The exhibition brings together 40 works from the Bowerman Collection alongside paintings from Penlee's own collection, offering a chance to discover Cornish life through the eyes of artists including Stanhope and Elizabeth Forbes, Walter Langley and Dod Procter.
There is also time to catch Caroline Walker: Mothering at Newlyn Art Gallery and Libita Sibungu: Zed Love at The Exchange in Penzance. Both exhibitions finish on 31 October 2026, so this is their final week.
If you would like to pick up a pencil yourself, The Exchange Cafe hosts Halloween Life Drawing on Thursday 29 October, from 6pm to 9pm. A costumed model provides the inspiration, and beginners as well as experienced sketchers are welcome. Book through the official event page and check availability before making plans.
I would pair a gallery visit with a leisurely town wander and a warm drink, then head back to your Golds Cornish Properties holiday base by the sea. Check each venue's opening days, admission and event arrangements before travelling.
